How to Ensure a Smooth WordPress Migration: Must-Do Tasks After Moving

Migrating your WordPress site? Great! But the real work begins after the move—checking for broken links, fixing SEO issues, and making sure everything runs smoothly. Here’s a quick and easy checklist to follow after migration.

1. Check If Your Site Loads Properly

Before anything else, open your website and browse a few pages.
✅ Is the homepage loading?
✅ Are images and videos showing correctly?
✅ Do all links work?

If something looks off, clear your cache and check your DNS settings if you switched hosts.

2. Update DNS and Domain Settings

If you moved to a new hosting provider, update your DNS records in your domain registrar.
🔹 Change the A record to your new hosting’s IP address.
🔹 Wait for 24-48 hours for full propagation.

3. Fix Broken Links & Permalinks

After migration, URLs may break. To fix them:
🔹 Go to WordPress → Settings → Permalinks and click Save Changes (even without edits).
🔹 Use a tool like Broken Link Checker to find and fix broken URLs.

4. Test Contact Forms & Logins

Make sure your forms, logins, and checkout pages work.
✅ Try logging into /wp-admin.
✅ Submit a contact form (does it send emails?).
✅ If it’s an eCommerce site, place a test order.

5. Speed Up Your Site

Website slow after migration? Try this:
✔️ Enable caching (WP Rocket, W3 Total Cache).
✔️ Optimize images (Smush, Imagify).
✔️ Use a CDN (Cloudflare) for faster global loading.

6. Check Your SSL Certificate

If your old hosting provided SSL, you might need to reinstall it.
🔹 Visit your site using https://—does it show a padlock?
🔹 If you see a “Not Secure” warning, install Really Simple SSL plugin.

7. Update Google Search Console & SEO

If you changed domains, update Google:
🔹 Go to Google Search Console → Change of Address Tool.
🔹 Resubmit your XML sitemap in Search Console.
🔹 Set up 301 redirects for old URLs using the Redirection plugin.

8. Set Up Automatic Backups

Never risk losing data. Set up regular backups with:
✔️ UpdraftPlus (free & automatic).
✔️ Jetpack Backup for real-time backups.
